Im being quite creative now the cupboard is bare but wondered if any of you have any ideas on how to create a filling meal.
So far I have created curries, stews, bologneises and sausage casseroles with barely nothing!
Chris D,appreciate the recipe but my budget doesnt extend to chicken breasts at the moment…had to make do with diced turkey this week as it was on offer.Really need some cheap ideas with cheap ingredients until I get out of this spot.

Answer by Winnie
Macaroni and Cheese
Hot Dogs
Chili
Goulash
Sloppy Joes
Spaghetti
Soup and Sandwiches
Eggs,potatoes,sausage
Pancakes
French Toast
Anything with pasta

Answer by Robert C
Pasta bakes are good. They are filling and don’t require lots of ingredients.

Tinned tuna with tinned tomatoes and a baking tin full of pasta cooked at 180 F for 1 hour…a good dinner!

Answer by tellmeplease
CHEAP BEEF STROGANOFF

2 tbsp. butter
1/2 c. diced onions
Garlic
2 tbsp. flour
2 tbsp. salt
1 can sliced mushrooms
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 lb. ground beef
1 can consomme
1 tbsp. vinegar
1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
1 bag egg noodles
1 pt. sour cream

In a heavy skillet over medium heat, melt butter, saute onion and garlic until soft. Sprinkle mixed flour, salt and pepper over meat. Add meat and mushrooms to skillet and cool. Stir often for 6 minutes.
Stir in consomme, vinegar, tomato paste. Simmer, uncovered for 10 minutes. Stir often, cook until desired consistency. Cook noodles for 14 minutes, drain in hot water, return to cooking pan after melting 2 tablespoons butter. Blend in sour cream just before serving and simmer 2 minutes to heat. Serve over noodles

CHARLIE’S CHEAP CHILI

1 lb. extra lean chopped beef
1 can peeled tomatoes
1 can tomato sauce
1 lg. yellow onions, chopped
1/2 sm. green pepper, chopped
1 1/2 tbsp. chili powder
1 tsp. cumin

Brown the beef and onions in a 12 inch skillet and drain before adding all other ingredients. Simmer for 1-2 hours. Serves 2 with healthy appetites!

CHEAP AND CHIC MEAT BALL

1 lb. lean ground beef
1/4 c. bread crumbs
1 egg, beaten
Sprinkle garlic salt, pepper
1 lg. onion, quartered
2 carrots, sliced
1 green pepper, cut in quarters

Form 10-12 medium sized meat balls. Heat oil in large fry pan. Brown meatballs evenly and cook until done. Remove and set aside. Pour off all but 2 tablespoons of fat, add prepared vegetables and stir fry over medium heat for 10-15 minutes until crisp.

SAUCE:

1/2 c. brown sugar
1 tbsp. cornstarch
1/3 c. water
1/4 c. white vinegar
1 tbsp. soy sauce
1 chicken bouillon cube

Combine sugar, cornstarch gradually. Blend in water, vinegar and soy sauce. Add bouillon cube. Bring to a boil, stirring until thick and clear. Add vegetables and meatballs. Heat and serve over rice.

My family are taking a short break for 5 nights in Isley, an island in scotland, where there isnt much to do.

I was wondering if anyone can think of anything we could do , in raian and in sunshine, and things to keep the kids busy, as the youngest is 6 and the oldest 15 ?

Answer by Mr.Kenan
Depends what their into, a lot of kids like video games so you could buy a PSP, that always works with all ages, let the oldest take an MP3 Player as they like their music and generally spend some family time the rest

If you have enough money to spare you could also buy a portable DVD Player.

Answer by Robert W
dont go

Answer by bigian1179
show them how to build a fire properly make smores (2 chocolate digestives and toasted marshmallows) get a plant reference book and get them to find individual plants(older kids like the poisonous ones) give them jobs to do round the camp

I will be traveling with two small children (2 & 4) and 3 teenagers (all girls) and possibly without my husband and I want to go somewhere that I would feel safe with them. I was thinking a gated resort would be good but have heard there are still breakins there. I have also looked at Paradise Palms and then just a home in Thousand Oaks. Thank you for any help anyone can give me.

Answer by Travel Bunnie
Hi there,

Try Windsor Palms, Its quite expensive, my dad paid $ 3,000 a week for our 7 bed, but anyway it has a Community centre where only people there are aloud to go, with own gym, cinema etc…
im pretty sure its gated, and its a really nice area…
And if safe is ur main priority on holiday then this is ur best bet…

Answer by Bluecalamari
I highly doubt you will encounter any crime. House breaking is very uncommon.

If you are feeling nervous then go for a gated community that actually has a security man on the gate rather than just one with a key code entry. I know Terra Verde has good security – it is in a great position too. The villas have private pools but there is also a nice community pool and gym.

I assume you are going to rent direct from the owner so you could make sure that they have an alarm system and a local agent who will call and go over its operation with you.

Have fun

Thinking of travelling with my husband and 4 yr old son in May round New Zealand for 3-4 wks. Flight and stopover suggestions? car (Motels and camping) or camper rental? Would like to visit North and South Island, any suggestions as to what to see? we have friends in Hastings who we will stay a few days with. Any help much appreciated

Answer by 203
I did my third self drive tour in New Zealand only a few weeks back in February.

Whether car or motorhome is personal preference. All I can say is if you choose a motorhome please occasionally check the rear view mirror and let any cars building up behind you pass. As perhaps you might guess I travelled by car and inconsiderate motorhome drivers can be a curse holding you up on twisting mountain roads for miles and miles.

There is a very wide range of accomodation available for travellers on the road. Whether that is holiday parks etc for motor homes or motels and hotels for cars. For convenience of central booking I stayed in Bella Vista motels in many of the places I visited.

My total experience of the north island over three visits is two nights in Wellington so I can’t really suggest anything for the north. The interislander ferry trip between Wellington and Picton is worth doing in it’s own right never mind just to get from A to B. It passes through the very scenic Queen Charlotte sounds as it approaches/leaves Picton.

The south island is arguabley the much more scenic, not that the north isn’t.

Some places I’d suggest putting on your itinery are.

Marlborough sounds
Kaikoura. Famous for whale watching trips but a gorgeous seaside town anyway
A drive over the mountains from Christchurch to the west coast down to Franz Josef (stunning!)
Franz Josef. Famous for it’s glacier of the same name
Wanaka. A nice little town on the banks of Lake Wanaka
Queenstown. The adventure capital of NZ. Absolutely loads to see and do from here
Milford Sound. Magnificent scenery.

I do the flight in one go without a stopover. My intention is to get to/from NZ so I get on with that without any hanging around. You just have to get to the plane at the outset with a positive mindset that you are going to be in the air for 24 hours or more in total. It’s not that bad anyway, the inflight entertainment on Air New Zealand is very good indeed and does a pretty good job of keeping you occupied.

Answer by jennifer h
Being May the weather can be getting very cold. I don’t think you will be to comfortable with a campervan and a 4 year old that time of year. I suggest you hire a car and stay at motels. I suggest you fly into Auckland and out of Christchurch . Most motels have kitchen facilities. or you could also stay in cabins at motor camps. A good one is De Bretts at taupo and I think it gives you free access to the hot pools there The 4 year old would have fun there. http://www.taupodebretts.com/
Drop the hire car off in Wellington and have a couple of days there taking a trip in the Cable car to the Botanical gardens you get views accross the City and harbour there. Get the ferry to Picton cost without a car is about $ 65 each not sure about child price . The ferry takes 3 hours and pick up another hire car in Picton. Travel via Queen Charlotte Sounds on you way to Nelson. Go out to Kaiteriteri from Nelson through Motueka. and up the hill there. It is such a paradise . Then travel down the west Coast through Franze Joseph and Fox glacier to Queenstown Make your way back up to Christchurch. Have at least 2 weeks if not more down South if you get back to Christchurch with a day or 2 spare you can have a day trip to Hamner Springs.
http://www.top10.co.nz/

Answer by KEVIN T
Answers from Jennifer H and 203 are both good but I would add a couple of things.

1. The roads in most of New Zealand are more like the A and B roads in the UK, there are very few stretches of motorway or even dual carriageway so any journey can be a long one. (Almost always beautiful but long). You will need more time than you think for travelling, don’t underestimate time and distances over there, nor the need to stop to admire something on the way.
2. Hiring a car and staying in motels is definitely going to be the best bet for a family at that time of year.

Moving on to getting there. I travel frequently to Australia, three times a year on average, and have been to New Zealand twice in the last ten years. I would look at two airlines in particular.

Air New Zealand offer services from Heathrow via either Hong Kong or Los Angeles. Both of these make great stopovers. The route via Hong Kong is a couple of hours shorter than the other way. Both use Boeing 747 aircraft.

Emirates Fly from Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow to Dubai and then on to New Zealand. They fly their brand new A380 via Sydney to both Auckland and Christchurch. Some flights also go via Bangkok and others are direct between Dubai and Sydney.

In short you could stop over in Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Dubai, Bangkok or Sydney depending on your choice of airline.

I love New Zealand and I hope you will too.

Hi, I would be grateful for some ideas on a family holiday location for August 2011. It will be my 30th birthday so am looking for something nice but not too extortionate!
There will be my husband and I and my 2 children ( aged 4 and 3) and possibly my stepson (10).
I am sure we will all be happy with nice weather, pool, beach and nice accommodation/food.
Any ideas please ??

Answer by Jeroen Wijnands
What you’re looking for can be found all along the med coast. Perhaps you need to think into specifics like if you want all inclusive or not, big resort or small hotel, if you want nightlife within crawling distance or rather some sightseeing opportunities in the area.

Answer by angelface2745
try one of the greek islands, kefalonia and rhodes are really beautiful, and the weather is great.

Answer by Gerry Lennon
Last year we went to Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt – better exchange than Euros! We went to a hotel/water-park complex, all-inclusive,and had a great time. Kids of 18,17, 10 and 6 all had plenty to do.
Mind you, it may be a bit TOO hot in August – we went in May and it was 35+ every day!

I would like to take my family to Rhodes next year. basically its a suprise for my mother, there will be 16 of us altogether adults and children, I live in East Yorkshire and would like any sugestions on flight and accomadation or who to book with any help would be much appreciated.

Answer by ??????? (GR)
I live in Greece and Rhodes is one of the most touristic island in my country. There are a lot of things to do, and to see. If you want to see photos from this place go there. http://realgreece-rhodos.blogspot.com/

Answer by hibicent
There are so many different facets to Rhodes! You can enjoy the beautiful old castle with the mosaics and the glorious history, and the cobblestone roads leading in and out of it, or if you prefer , hit the modern clubs and awesome shopping . There are too many things to mention, I would follow the links the kind Mihalis gave you and prepare to have a great time! As far as flights, there are many that fly out on a daily basis from Athens, or you could enjoy a boat ride over your choice. Hotels are many and I would recommend that you book in advance. Greece is a magnificent vacation spot and the people are gracious and kind, they have a word, “filoxenia” , roughly translated means befriend the stranger , which they take very much to heart!

Answer by Leonarda
Rhodes is the capital of Dodecanese, World heritage city, the island of the knights…
I suggest you to avoid places such as Lindos or Faliraki to stay, even if the installations are luxury, because there is so much hot, and so much noise…
I suggest you the place of Ixia, and generally the nothern part of the island, or the centre…
Good tour operators are Thomas cook with flight included and very convenient accommodation…
In case you need more information, you can ask me, i am rodian…and live here
