As long as I can remember I have took much pleasure from baking. In my early childhood I found it an exciting treat, to this day it still stirs that emotion in me. In this narrative essay I highlight my reasons to why it continues to be a big part of my life.
My first memories of baking is with my Nana pops, my maternal grandmother, who I seem to remember was always in the kitchen. An uncomplicated woman, she was in every sense the ‘perfect’ housewife, who favoured to use traditional tools for the job. Every Saturday she would get out her fantastic, old fashioned, emerald green scales. As a young girl I would spend hours playing with the weights, delighting in being allowed to touch something so grown up. I was very fortunate to have two grandmothers who loved to bake, as is common with alot of their generation, and was often indulged in this glorious hobby.
Baking invokes such sweet memories for me and this is something I am keen to pass onto my son and godchildren. I enjoy nothing more than reaching for my nana’s old scales and baking with the children on a weekend. It is such a joy to see the delight in a child’s face when they taste their freshly baked bread or sweet chocolate cakes. My sons favourite is our chocolate crispy cakes, my own secret recipe, which we will make on many a night and eat in front of the fire while reading fairy tales.
I find baked goods are a gift that most people will enjoy and appreciate. I have found that children love to bake for adult family members, my son certainly does, and feel it is a gift that is solely from them. I often like to make friends and family members a birthday cake relevant to their interests. In the past I have made a range of cakes from a fantastic tardis for 30 to a spectacular fairytale castle. However I do not limit my baking to special occasions and will often make cakes and fresh bread when I have visitors. I feel there is no greater smell, than that of freshly baked food.
Like everyone I have my favourite recipes.I adore chocolate fudge cake, I must admit this is the one cake that will never last long in my house, but it proves very detrimental to my waste line. I delight in the smell of freshly baked bread, the mere thought makes my mouth water. I always enjoy freshly baked produce a lot more than mere shop bought items, maybe this is because the anticipation of the baking always seems to make it taste that much sweeter.
Although I adore baking and find it a very tranquil hobby I must admit it does suffer from one huge draw back, the washing up. I detest washing up, I find it bore some, irritating, tiring, in general a horrid chore. I vow to myself that when funds allow I will purchase a dish washer and know when that time comes that my house will always have a smell that invokes such stronger, idyllic childhood memories.
Baking truly is a part of me and has always been. It reminds me of simpler happy times, of a nana sadly gone and most of all stirring memories of times gone by. I feel that baking is a major part of my family and hope that when my son grows it will be a passion that he will pass on to his own children.

Like everyone … it proves very detrimental to my waste line. (It’s either detrimental or not. It can’t be any more than detrimental, therefore the “very” is not required – it’s like saying “very extremely so” – though you could say “most detrimental”, i.e. this does more harm than anything else).
… The anticipation of the baking always seems to make it taste that much sweeter. (Your bread tastes sweet – is it brioche? Do you mean better? Or is this another terrible pun? Or as you would probably say, a terrible ‘bun’?)
… I detest washing up, I find it bore some (what? I think you mean “a bore”), irritating, tiring, in general a horrid chore (you’ve started rhyming now!).

Maybe you need to use the word “nostalgia” at some point?).
I feel that baking is a major part of my family and hope that when my son grows (up, presumably? Or gets fat eating all the bread and cakes?) …it will be a passion that he will pass on to his own children. (You’ve said this already – you may need to restructure the earlier mention here if you want this to be your ending).
(The essay doesn’t convey much information, but it manages to not convey much information over quite a few words – did you have a word count requirement?)

-Capitalize “nana”.
-”on weekends,” not “over a weekend”.
-”when HE OR SHE (not “they”) taste HIS OR HER (not “their”) freshly baked . . .”.
-In the fourth paragraph, you start one sentence with “I find” and the next with “I have found,” which sounds redundant. I’d find a different way to begin the second sentence. Also, that second sentence seems to run-on. Break it up.
-Say “birthday cakeS” (plural), because you make more than one.
-”for 30″. Do you mean to say “for a 30th birthday”?
-In the fifth paragraph, put a period after “fudge cake”.
-I feel like you keep using “will” when it’s not necessary. In my opinion, you should take it out and write “never lasts long . . .”.
-Put a period after “freshly baked bread”.
-”The mere thought [OF IT] . . .”
-You use the word “mere” in two consecutive sentences. Seems too repetitive.
-Put a period after “items”. This is another run-on.
-”boresome” is one word.
-Put a semicolin (not a comma) after “tiring”.
-In the second to last paragraph, break up the second sentence. I also think you meant to say “strong,” not “stronger”.
-Put a comma after “simpler” and a semicolin after “happy times”.
-”stirring memories of times gone by.” You kind of already said that. I’d either rephrase it or take it out.
-Make up a couple of broad, general sentences in the intro about your feelings on baking. In the conclusion, you should again briefly list/go over your general points to really drive the main ideas home.
