I’m really considering medicine as a career and just want an idea of where is best to go. I know you need the most points for Trinity… also if you could put your answers in order as in like a top 5 list and explain why each is good it would be very helpful and much appreciated.

Answer by Megan
1. Trinity
2. NUIG (National University of Ireland, Galway)
3. UCD (University college of Dublin)
4. UCC (University College of Cork)

All of the main universities here offer a brilliant education but Trinity does look best on a resume.
I don’t know enough about each of the medical courses to give you a fair opinion, but personally i would choose NUIG, the points are lower and you would get the same education there as you would in any of the dublin colleges. Also as a plus Galway is the most student friendly city in ireland and the cost of living there is much cheaper than studying in the capital.

If you want opinions from people currently studying in each of those universities i’d reccommend checking out http://boards.ie there is a separate forum there for each.
I know people studying in each of those universities and they love their courses.

Trinity: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=468
NUIG:http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=569
UCD:http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=470
UCC:http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=548

Make an account and leave questions on each, they would be more than happy to help.

I have a big problem giving my cat a medicine, especially if its pills(from the fleas,or from worms).she just does not take them,or if you hide them in the food, she still finds them and leaves.or in the worst scenario-does not eat at all for a few days until you change food in to a new one without medicine:any ideas how to make her eat them?

Answer by vickibackman76
The last time my cat chloe got sick her vet gave us a cream to go on the inside of her ear. It worked great and she tollerated it. and the vet said that even if she licked it off. it was going to help her that way. (The med was Reglan)

Answer by optimismopski
Coat the pills in butter, gently sit your cat in front of you on the floor, tilt their head up towards you and put your thumb gently at the corner of one side of the mouth- then drop the pill in when it opens up nice and wide, keeping the head facing you, not down. You may have to gently rub its throat to get it to swallow the pill.
Should work well- just be as soothing and gentle as possible and make sure to give it plenty of praise and love afterwards!

Answer by murphymavericks
you can shuv it down its throut or put it in its favorite food .

Can I study medicine and go to medical school with these gcse grades?
My gcse grades are as followed:
5A*- Biology, Chemistry, Maths, R.E, History
2A
1B
3C

I want to go to either birmingham university or leicester University,
I know how competitive medicine is nowadays.

I would just like to know if I had any chances of getting in.

Answer by DangerousDave
Birmingham’s current entry requirements are for medicine and surgery undergraduate

Entry requirements
Number of A levels required: 3
Typical offer: AAA
Required subjects and grades: predicted A level grades should be AAA, including Chemistry and another science (Biology, Physics or Mathematics); If the second science is not Biology, then AS Biology at grade A is required. The third A level must NOT be General Studies or Critical Thinking.
GCSE requirements: candidates are expected to offer a good range of GCSE subjects at high grades (normally at least seven at A*); English Language and Mathematics are normally required at grade A; Integrated Science (double certificate) at grade A is acceptable as an alternative to single sciences.
General Studies: not accepted

So I think you could be in with a shout, however you will need to study hard for those A-levels, they are good grades so far, so keep it up and I am sure you will make the grade (scuse the pun)

Hey, I am currently thinking of picking mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry and Arabic. If I get grade A for all of these subjects, do I stand a chance of getting into university for doing medicine. Also, do you think I should change one of the subjects?

Answer by Jan409
your subjects choice is lookinhg good, but I can’t see the point in Arabic for medicine
Latin -yes, but not Arabic
Much better if you picked ‘Englsih’asa subject at ‘A’level than Arabic

Answer by bobjgalindo
I like them all, especially the Arabic. It set you aside from other applicants taking the same all language courses: spanish, latin, etc. Getting straight As helps your chances of getting into medical school. Your scores in the MCAT are also HIGHLY important. Looks like you are on the right track, work hard and you will get there!!!

Answer by Radhika Yagnik
I think you do have a strong chance into getting into uni for doing medicine as those subjects are very strong and have main points and are very much needed in becoming a doctor, working in the chemist, or experimenting medicine as formulas’ and quantities are required. I do agree with the last awnser that you should not learn arabic as right now most medicine are translated in latin but I do believe you will need to learn latin in the future as they are experimenting a lot of medicine in the middle east so i would say overall that you should learn arabic + all the other subjects you mentioned and latin as it would be easier to learn. Hope this helped!!!

This summer I want to do some kind of work experience, or shadowing relating medicine. From experience does anyone know what would be a good type of work experience to go for? How would I be able to find out about this? What do medical schools look for in work experience? Also has anyone been to medlink confrences, and if so were they helpful?

Thankyou x

Answer by Jen
My friend worked in a doctors reception before she started medicine.
I think she did something like St John’s ambulance work too…anything people-related should help you!

Answer by pseudonym
Work in a care home looks brilliant on medical school applications, because it shows you to be a philanthropic, caring sort of person.

Shadowing a doctor is also good, if you can find one who is willing. So too is getting experience in different “behind-the-scenes” departments, such as the pathology labs.

The medlink conference is good, if you can afford it. Its informative – but only to a degree. I can’t say I actually learned very much, but it was an interesting taster.

Answer by Roosh
I was a member of St John Ambulance for many years. A lot of our younger members went on and trained in a professional medical career.

i would like to know what the average ks3 S.A.T.S , gcse and a-levels requirements are of those currently studying medicine at either cambridge, oxford or sheffield university.

thank u

Answer by Scarface
all A’s for everything

Answer by Sea Bass
basically most universities will be looking for at least 6 GCSEs with A … then 3 A-levels usually AAB (including a scientific subject like biology or chemistry)

however, if you dont get good GCSE, no need to worry .. they only say that but they only look at ur A-levels .. if u get ABB many unis will still accept u ..

Cambridge and oxford will usually look for AAA but can accept AAB, am not sure if they accept ABB though ..

i got accepted with 2 Ds !! but i had a degree already in biomedical science ..

so … good luck !! medicine is really interesting and if u can get to it ull defently like it ..

Answer by Laura L
not sure what that is.
But my Dr. uses a little wand connected to a machine on which he places a vial of the item he is testing for.
It is very good and painless testing as there are no needles used, just putting the wand ont he side of the finger to register the test.

Answer by KungFoolio
BioElectronic Regulatory Medicine is nothing but a scam.

Ok so after you have obtained a degree in medicine in the UK how do you apply to a hospital to do the two year foundation training course in the UK?
Thanks.

Answer by Insan
The national coordinating body for the Foundation Programme is the UK Foundation Programme Office. The website for application is http://www.foundationprogramme.nhs.uk/.

First thing you need to do is make sure you are eligible to apply. If you qualified in medicine in the UK, then you are eligible.

Then, the application form will be available for you to view online and you can view details of all programmes at each foundation school. You can start preparing your answers.

You need to register and enrol online at www.foundationprogramme.nhs.uk.

Then, you will need to complete the online application form. You have to rank all the places you want to apply to (1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice etc.).

From the application form becoming available to view you have about a month before you have to submit the form. This is around Sep/Oct time the year before you wish to start your foundation programme.

Note: The application form is based on a points system. Max score is 100 points. Points are split into academic ranking (40 points) and application questions (60 points). With regards to academic ranking, points are allocated depending on which quartile you finish in. So, 1st quartile – 40 points. 2nd quartile – 38 points. 3rd quartile – 36 points. 4th quartile – 34 points. Basically, if you qualify from medicine being in the top 25% of your year, that will benefit you in your application and you will be given more points for that. Now, about application questions, there are 6 questions for you to answer which are worth 10 points each. In question 1, you will get up to 6 points if you have an extra degree, and up to 4 points for other educational achievements like peer-reviewed publications, oral/poster presentations, and prizes at a national level. Questions 2 to 6 are basically questions about your medical experience. 200 words limit per question.

In Nov/Dec time, your application is scored and you will be notified which foundation school you have been allocated to.

Then by about Jan the next year, you need to choose a specific foundation programme to apply to.

By Feb, you will be notified when you have been matched to a specific programme.

Then pass your exams and qualify, and by Jul/Aug, you will be issued a contract of employment and your foundation programme will start around Aug or so.
