ICT PGCE statement

In 2004 I graduated with a BSC honours degree in Multimedia and Internet technology from the University of Salford. Like many students I decided to keep my options open while gaining some work experience to improve my interpersonal and development skills. Teaching has been one of my career aspirations due to the challenge it brings and as a self-motivated, organised and energetic person I feel I can bring much to the teaching profession. My desire to teach has been developed through the philosophy that education is the key to success.

Since concluding my studies I have been working as a 999 operator for British Telecommunications PLC. Having worked in this fast paced working environment I have significantly improved my communication and listening skills and I have developed a confident tone of speech. I have done supervisory roles by liasing with the countries Emergency authorities, which show I can take responsibility and can manage a large group. At home I have kept up to date with the world of IT and have worked on numerous projects.

I am attracted to the teaching profession because I enjoy working with young people and get a thrill when my hard work pays off and I see the results. Experience is a crucial area to develop further ideas about teaching and gives an insight of life in the teaching profession. Currently, I am observing a teacher in ICT at Hamilton high school where I am spending one day a week observing and helping out in a secondary school. The methods are very hands on as many of the ICT classes are practical and the students have appreciated my contribution to the class.

Studying the PGCE at this well renowned institution will be an opportunity to unleash my potential and gain at first hand experience of teaching through the placements. I am particularly looking forward to the fact that teaching is one profession where two days are never the same. I am certain that I will thoroughly enjoy being a teacher. As I possess excellent up to date knowledge on the intended subject and educational needs. I have recently looked into educational issues such as Linguistic and Cultural Diversity, differentiation and classroom management.

At home I have kept up-to date with my web design skills and I have recently started expanding on modules that are taught at high school. Such as Hardware, software, communication, databases, desktop publishing and the system life cycle.

I am a very friendly with an approachable personality. Having experienced the educational environment from nursery to University. I am very much aware of the needs of children and understanding how to address. I will be able to utilise my experience to provide an insight into the real working life.

Other than English I speak fluent Bengali and Urdu with excellent interpretation and translation skills. Being billinguel allows me to address and reach a wider audience. I enjoy reading books, watching movies and sport.

Answer by hairy_spaghetti
Sounds good however you may like to change the spelling of ‘bilingual’ in your final paragraph .Good Luck.

Answer by spudscarecrow
First paragraph: change to “liaising with the national emergency services”
“worked on numerous projects”: identify one or two of these.
Hamilton High School: proper capitals.
Delete “in a secondary school”: not needed.
“Studying the PGCE at this well renowned institution will be an opportunity to unleash my potential”: a little creepy! Suggest “I hope that my PGCE studies will help me realise my potential…”
Finally, you are trilingual if you speak three languages fluently.

Otherwise it looks like a good statement. Good luck with it!

Answer by Gazza Bear
What I spotted (in addition to previous comments):
‘liasing with the countries Emergency authorities, which show I can’ should be ‘liaising with the country’s emergency authorities, which shows that I can’ and if you mention ‘numerous projects’ then it would be an idea to briefly outline what these are.
In addition, ‘insight of life in the teaching’ I would change to ‘insight to the teaching’ & remove the coma after ‘Currently’
As you have mentioned that Hamilton is a High School (capitals for names), then the reader will know that this is a ‘secondary’ school, so stop your sentence at ‘helping out.’
‘hands-on’ rather than ‘hands on’
Remove ‘at’ & add ‘-’ so you get ‘gain first-hand experience’, ‘up to date’ should also be hyphenated as ‘up-to-date’.
‘Such as Hardware, software’ should be ‘Such as hardware, software’.
What do you mean by ‘desktop publishing and the system life cycle’? I think you may mean ‘project life cycle’ or ‘system design life cycle’, be a bit more specific.
Change ‘nursery to University. I am very much aware of the needs of children and understanding how to address.’ to ‘nursery to university. I am very much aware of the needs of children and how to address those needs.’
‘Other than English I speak fluent Bengali and’ should have a coma – ‘Other than English, I speak fluent Bengali and’.
Finally, do you enjoy watching sport, or playing? Your text implies watching, not playing.

You English is certainly better than my Bengali or Urdu.

If you are doing a PGCE then you will need to have plenty of confidence in yourself – good luck!

I’ve just turned 22, I apply to college most years and don’t end up going by September, every Jan i apply and re asses my life, for years i wanted to go to PGL, so this jan i went to Surrey to work there, now i’m back and coaching at a local outdoor activity centre.
I’ve always coached kids (nursery assistant, gymnastics/cheerleading coach, gym instructor, personal trainer, PGL coaching) i fell into coaching but i love it, but i want a change in life before im too old to start back on min wage. since coaching i have been to college to study interior deisgn which i love however to progress i would need to go to uni, and i dont fancy working in or near london, and thats where the majority of the work is.

my options are; horse riding/horse care, interior design (uni), carry on coaching, become a primary teacher (uni) hairdressing.

i sometimes get fed up of working outdoors esp in winter, but i mostly love it, and hate sitting in a office that would kill me, ideally i don’t want to be on aprenticeship wage but i could work at a pub in the evenings for money. also being 22 i will have to pay full wack of the college fees, i also get fed up of weaing scruffy clothes and fancy a girly job, however i find it hard to get on with women and normally prefer a male industry. in an ideal world i’ll be a house developer/designer and work with building companies and do staging for show homes but i really am confused and duno which way to turn

HELP PLEASEE

Answer by Number 6
Teaching is well paid, plenty of holidays, pension….
Opportunities re Outdoors if you specialise in PE.

Other options:

Outdoor pursuits instructor at a suitable centre,
Go to Uni / college re interior Design. Might be worth going to an open evening / discuss with lecturers what the possible options are job / career opportunities at the end of the course.

Hiya,
I am trying really hard to get into university as a mature applicant and was wondering if anybody has an idea of my chances of gaining a place at Edinburgh? I am currently working as a Nursery Nurse part-time, but I have completed an Access to teaching course. I also have several months worth of experience volunteering in a primary school and a children’s play centre.

During school and Sixth Form my grades suffered greatly, as I had a lot on my plate but I feel I could explain this in my personal statement. My GCSEs aren’t very good I have a C in English and a double CC in Science. I plan to spend the rest of this year gaining at least a pass, hopefully a B, in Mathematics, as it is required in the entry requirements. I also gained a Merit in a GNVQ Business studies course. I have an A level in Applied Business, which I recieved a DD for and a AS level in Art and Design ( C ).

I worked out my UCAS points and it works out to be around 160, but I am still worried because the course is very competitive. Seeing as I do not hold the traditional BBB at A level they are asking for will the university actually look at my application or just bypass it.

Can anyone offer advice on good Universities to study at, ones that offer support and good facilities. Also which Universities will not even look at my application, I’ve been told that if I tried to apply to Oxford, which I am not, they wouldn’t even look at my application. Is this true?

Also What are the top 5/10 Universities that are considered to be the hardest to get into? I’ve heard that when applying for a job in the future can the university you attend matter to a employer?

Answer by Fred quasenormal
100% To get a job after…I’m not sure! Good luck!

Answer by Super
Hardest to get into (UK) not particularly in order…
Oxford/Cambridge
Warwick
Durham
Edinburgh
St Andrews
UCL
Imperial

it also depends on the course, which will vary. I go to Edinburgh uni, the admission stats are at http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/student-recruitment/admissions-advice/admissions-stat2010-2011

Well i guess its sorta true that Oxford would not look far into you application. Rule of thumb of getting oxford offer is atleast 6A*s and the rest being As for GCSE. And 3 As at Alevel. Of course there are some that get the offer with lower grades.

Well if you think your grades arent good enough, you can always make your CV better with work experience or co-curricular activities. Talk about stuff that your interested that’s related to the course you want to do. Edinburgh really base their decisions on the personal statement. So make it as good as it can get. Ask people to read your personal statement and ask for their thoughts on improvements etc… Write what really makes you different from other applicants.

All i can say now is good luck, if you don’t get in, there are plenty of other unis that will accept you as their student. once in uni, work really hard for the best degree u can. Unis imo dont really matter much, as long as you get a good 1st class degree, job experience and skills, and carry yourself well, you’ll definitely get a well suited job.

Basically ive applied for college to study,
A lvl ; Media Studies and Film, Psychology, Art and design, photography, and dance.

Only one problem my dad says that there a waste of time and if i ever wanted to go to uni (which i dont) i wouldn’t get in with these.

But wat i want to do is be on tv, front or back of camera, doing advertisements, kids shows, art attack style things and kids dance vids. (i love little children and making stuff and used to want to own a nursery)

Also my uncle is anthony sullivan who like has a company in america call sullivan productions and he wants me out there now (which id love to do) but i want to go to college and do those things so if i wanted to work in england i have better chances as my uncle would hire me whatever….

What do you think is there anyway i can still get to uni (IF i wanted to?) or shall i accept my dads wishes and take all 3 sciences, (baring in mind i hate dissecting things , and cant handle acid and experiments coz im a hypochondriac), critical thinking, english, maths and things like that?

URGENT HELP REQUIRED

Cheers xx

Answer by Jovi Freak
Your dad is wrong !

You would get into Uni with your choices, it would be dependent on what you choose to study at uni, obviously you wouldn’t get in to study Physics ! But thats not what you want to do so it’s ok

Answer by Goatsucker
Our country is in such a bad state because we waste money teaching media studies. why don’t you learn something useful or get a job

Answer by Jordan B
weird

When I was in the nursery I carried out many responsibilities and one of the main ones was learning to work with other people from different age groups and cultures etc. However working in the office was somewhat different, because I was using more technology, like computers, telephones and also working with cash too. In both the nursery and the office the experience and responsibility I gained a lot and it was fantastic and I learned many things from them.
2004-2007 – 3 years work experience as a librarian at Barnsley Academy School
I worked as a librarian, it was fun and great experience for me, and the things I have done: tidying shelf’s, put the books in order, helping out the student finding the books.
Hobbies and Interests
Enjoy reading books. My main interest is within fashion, I like designing my own clothes, I love sewing and styling.
Skills
As a fashion student I have had to be well organised, meet deadlines and show commitment in order to achieve.

Answer by Spanner
Personally, I’d get rid of the text describing your role (as in the bartender job) and I’d also scrap the bits after details of your work experience. The “ I enjoyed working on both work experience because I gained a lot from them…”

Same goes for the bit after your experience as Librarian. I’d scrap the “I worked as a librarian…”
I’d also scrap the Hobbies and Interests section and the Skills bit.

All they need to know is where you worked, when and what you did. You run the risk of them losing interest by including a long and drawn out summary of each area.

I’d change the wording of your covering letter to something like –
“I am writing to express an interest in working with you / your firm should an opportunity arise in the near future. Should you wish to contact me, please feel free to do so at your convenience by emailing / phoning blah blah blah..
Kind regards”

Don’t bother putting your availability on the letter. You run the risk of sounding overconfident or being presumptuous. If they are interested in you, they’ll contact you and then ask what you’re able to do etc.

Good luck.

Answer by Syed
You shouldn’t add detail in paragraph as you have written just after you experience. Its looking too casual, Cover letter format and information is also too less..,, you should write only job related information in cover letter…

Hi there, need some help here!Im a full time single mum so get help from housing, income support etc. I really want to go to college and do web design, I have lately designed my own website and it cost £30.00 to do , I done all this from scratch and I am good at it,website looks neat.I want to do this as a job, don’t want to sit on my bum allday not working.I have seen that in my town there is a avaliable full time web design course,my little one would go to nursery, would I get help with course and child care?Would my housing benefit drop?Does anyone know if I could do this course, please help

Answer by Riley M
You can do this course if you want to, all you need to do is apply and just find more information about it, the hours the cost and what not.
You can get help with your financial problems i can’t remember how old you have to be for alg but its basically like ema which you get 30 pounds a week for over 18′s i think, you mite be able to do something like that.
Sorry can’t help much but i’m sure it could tell you more on google!

Answer by sashs.geo
You need to talk to the job centre. It depends on the course and your benefits.

If it is a uni course then you can probably go, your income support MAY be reduced by the amount of loan you take (and thee DSS force you to take the loan) but as you have a child you will continue to get housing benefit.

If it is not a uni course then you need the jobcentre to approve it. You are the kind of person they want to help, you are looking to your future and to getting a job.

Adapted from: Ian Barron, ‘An exploration of young children’s ethnic identities as communities
of practice’, British Journal of Sociology of Education, 28.6.2007, pp. 739–752.
There is very little research based on the nursery school years or on the ethnic identities of young
children living in the UK. This was one reason why Ian Barron explored the ethnic identities of children
aged three years old and four years old living in the North-West of England. He wanted to gain access to
the children’s everyday activities and to discover the complexities of how ethnic identity is experienced,
practised and performed by a particular group of children in the contexts of their homes and nursery
school, focusing on primary socialisation.
Due to the lack of available research evidence on children’s experience of ethnic identity, an ethnographic
approach was adopted. The research was carried out in a nursery school which was located in what
was originally an area of small terraced houses. However, the area had since been redeveloped. A
mosque had recently opened in a building behind the school. Thirty-two children were observed over
a five month period. The children were selected using two criteria. Firstly, gender, an equal number
of boys and girls were selected to take part in the research from the morning and afternoon nursery
school sessions. Secondly, ethnicity, children of white indigenous heritage and of Pakistani heritage
were selected, according to the overall ethnic mix of the school, which was four fifths Pakistani heritage
and one fifth indigenous white heritage.
The study began with a visit to each child’s home (accompanying the nursery staff) before the children
started at the nursery school. This was designed to enable Barron to understand something of the
children’s homes and prior experiences. This was followed up two weeks later with time spent in the
nursery observing as the children settled into nursery school and further research in November and
December when the nursery was celebrating the festivals of Eid and Christmas.
Ethics are always a concern in sociological research and particularly so when working with groups of
children who are too young to understand the meaning of informed consent. Permission to carry out the
research was gained from the Head Teacher and from the children’s parents. However, as the nature
of the research developed Barron had to make sure that he constantly sought the children’s approval
through explaining exactly what he was doing and why he was doing it. The study looked at children’s
play, actions, paintings, drawings and choice of friends rather than solely focusing on what the children
said. As some of the children and parents had limited understanding of English, the issue of gaining
informed consent was made more difficult.
Barron was concerned that the research was too subjective. Therefore he took every opportunity to
share his interpretation of the fieldwork with staff at the school as a form of respondent validation.
The home visits revealed a number of markers of ethnic identity such as home decoration and
furnishings, language and dress. The more affluent the Pakistani families seemed to be, the more
westernised their style of home decoration. In the homes of the indigenous white children all the
mothers wore casual clothes such as jeans and t-shirts. In almost all the homes of the Pakistani families
the mothers were dressed in salwar kameez, although none of the mothers wore the hijab or burkha.
Barron notes in his research that he felt uncomfortable in most of the homes. As a white, male, middle
class sociologist he wondered if he was really viewing the homes objectively.
The research in the nursery school showed that children tended to socialise in same-sex, same-ethnic
friendship groups. The lack of ethnic mix did not seem a concern to the nursery staff who thought these
friendship groupings were natural. Many of the children showed little interest in the Eid celebrations,
and seemed to consider skin colour as a determining factor in whether they would be celebrating
it. One girl of Pakistani heritage said that mendhi should not be worn by ‘white women’. During the
Christmas celebrations, the children least likely to know what was going on in the nativity play were
those with limited understanding of English.
Overall, the research findings provided only tentative conclusions about how the children viewed their
ethnic identity. It seemed to be based on factors such as the recognition of boundaries and differences
in relation to skin colour, language and religious celebrations and practices that occur during primary socialisation.

What theoretical poisition does Barron adopt? Do you think this is suitable for his research?

Answer by CHRIS
I believe your essay shows that he did not take up a position, but framed an experiment that would enable him to explore many facets of the interaction between young children of different backgrounds.
I believe it was very suitable for his research.
