Family Tattoo Ideas For My Back Piece?

This Question From Family Ideas | 4 Answers

THE POST:

I’m tattooing my entire back and it’s dedicated to my family. I have my last name across the top, and “Honor Thy Family” along the bottom. Besides my family crest which I already plan on getting, and the common portrait, what are some other ideas?

You will really regret finding a family crest online and having it tattooed on your body. Here’s why. There is no such thing as a family name coat of arms. The sites that sell such things are called bucket shops. A personal coat of arms is owned by a person, and is passed down through descendants, usually in the male line. So, you need to know if you descend from someone who owned the coat of arms. In the British Isles ownership is determined by a grant of arms, and in most other countries the arms can be assumed. In any case, family name arms are bogus.
Here is what I would do, if you live in the states. Contact the US Heraldic Registry or the The American College of Heraldry and have them design a coat of arms for you. That way, you won’t find out later that you had someone else’s coat of arms tattooed on your body.

You could get your families names, dates of birth, in english or a different language.
Or something related to each family member.
Their initials, star signs, something they’re interested in, a hobby of theirs etc.
Or you could get each member to pick something that they like/means something to them and get that done, or have them draw something for you, so it’s more personal then!

It’s a good choice as long as your family portrait were not enclosed in a frame.
