Alarm Systems work wonderfully (remember to use it though). Also, make sure your windows have locks (easy to install if they don't), and make sure your doors have, in addition to a standard lock, a chain, deadbolt, or other locking device that only can be set/unset from the inside. Make sure all areas around the house are well lit.
And arguably most importantly, be vigilant! Report suspicious people hanging by your house to the police right away. Look behind you before unlocking your door (so an attacker cannot push you in after you start to open it). Don't leave your keys in the door and don't ever leave the door unlocked. If you hide a key outside, make sure it is well hidden and very difficult to get to (not under the doormat).
Remember, all security features/precautions only help if you use them every time.
