I use a pentax *ist ds. I'm an amateur shooter that has shot a couple weddings and use it for my personal art as well. Pentax offers a 10mp under $1k which is a great price plus they retrofit all of their lenses. To me they seem to have a better weight/size than Nikkon and Cannon. Pentax are also built around the idea of being a tool and not a toy, so you won't find as much of the "fun features" as you do on those brands. I have heard good things about the Cannon and Nikkon DSLRs, but I've also heard that the size of the Nikkon is awkward and that the Cannon is a little heavy. All third hand knowledge.
My suggestion is to use whatever camera you are comfortable with. If you are transitioning from film to digital and are already used to a certain brand, I'd stay with that brand--More than likely you'll be able to use some/all of your peripherals plus the learning curve will be shorter.

at this point, I think an advanced point and shoot camera is the camera for you - preferrable something with larger than average sensor.
The Canon Powershot G9 sounds good for you - it is the best pocket camera currently made by Canon, it takes good pictures and for sure you will not be disappointed with them. Their ability to shoot RAW and a hotshoe to attach an external flash will give you an edge on night shoot compared to regular point and shoot camera.
I wouldn't recommend a DSLR to you until you learn more about photography, or you can enroll into a photography class and get one. In this case, The Canon Digital Rebel XT or the Nikon D40 is a good way to start.
You're going to need to know about photography for a good night shoot however - and a good tripod.
