is it safe to put your social security on online applications to places such as AMC movie theaters, where they only let you apply online and must put your social security number.

They wont need it until background checks, and they’ll only need to do a background check if they are seriously interested in you. Since the interest is much later in the process than the actual application then I would say no, you should not enter your social security number.
but if you MUST in order to continue to the next page, only do so if it is on a verified, authorized, and certified secure site (https)…. and you are POSITIVE that they are not phishing
I have applied for every single one of my jobs online, and I’ve never had to give my social security number until after the interview process.
There’s no reason for any business to ask for your SSN on an application. The only time they need it is after you’re hired, on your W-4 and I-9 forms. I wouldn’t apply with anyone that asks for it on the application before you’re hired.
