    Among the paid ones kaspersky and eset nod32 have grand reputations.Bitdefender isn’t bad either.Avira Premium Security Suite is what i personally find most effective.However avoid mcafee ,norton and microsoft security softwares.They are all crap.
    you can get descent free alternatives but they will not be what you call total security.
    whatever antivirus you might use you should get suspicious files like keygen patch etc checked from virustotal.com which scans a file with 30+ antivirus softwares.
    It is also mandatory to install antispyware products. Malwarebytes and adaware are among the best.

    It is pretty important to get avg linkscanner or mcafee siteadvisor or wot for safe surfing They would warn you of malicious sites

    Your best bet would be to download Ubuntu or Fedora Core.
    They are free and should come preinstalled with SELinux. Nothing better :)
